Do you ever wonder whether you'd be better off walking instead of taking the bus? This chart will help you answer that question.
Rule of thumb: if you have N blocks to travel, you should only wait for the bus if it is less than N minutes away.
We assume that buses travel at
30 15 mph, and that the average person walks a 20 minute mile. If you walk faster,
you can also consider the entries in blue, equivalent to a 15 minute mile. Questions or comments can be left here.
Update: we received a lot of feedback arguing that buses do not actually travel at 30mph, and we agree. We have updated this chart to reflect an average bus speed of 15mph rather than 30mph. Thanks to everyone who sent their feedback!
